We Moved a Family Two Doors Down on Country Club Way
Here's Why It Still Took Five Men

We’re The Moving Guys, a family-owned crew based right here in Enterprise, Alabama. And the move we want to tell you about is one a lot of folks assume they don’t need us for: the Solomon family, moving from one house on Country Club Way to another one a few doors down the same street.

A short move is still a real move. Going two houses down the street takes the same wrapping, the same lifting, and the same care as going across the state the only thing that actually changes is the drive time. Everything that can break, scratch, or throw your back out is exactly the same.

The Job: Same Street, New House

On paper this looks like the easiest job we’d run all week. A few hundred feet of sidewalk, no highway, no long haul across Alabama, Florida, or Georgia. In practice, a short move has one trap built into it, and almost everybody falls in: because the distance feels like nothing, people skip the part that protects their stuff.

So we ran it like any other full move:

We wrapped everything before it left the house. Blankets and shrink wrap on the case goods, corners padded, dresser drawers secured. A scratch doesn’t care whether it happened at 300 feet or 300 miles.

We loaded the trailer anyway. People always ask why we don’t just carry things down the street. Because a piece of furniture in your arms in the open is a piece of furniture at risk one wet patch of grass, one uneven curb, one gust of wind on a mattress, and you’ve got a repair bill. Loaded, strapped, driven, unloaded. Same as always.

We protected floors at both ends. New house, old house. Runners on the main path, doorways padded. Both homes were somebody’s home that day.

We staged it so the new house made sense. Boxes into the rooms they belong in, beds reassembled, furniture placed where the family wanted it not stacked in the living room for them to sort out over the next three weeks.

We did it in one continuous run. That’s the whole point of a five-man crew on a short job: two loading, one at the trailer, two receiving and placing at the new house. Nobody standing around. No dozen back-and-forth trips.

Why We Sent Five Men to a Move You Could Walk

On a short move, the driving is basically free so the only thing you’re paying for is labor time. And labor time doesn’t shrink when you send fewer guys. It stretches.

A two-man crew on a house that size is making twice the trips, taking more breaks, working slower by hour four, and every single one of your belongings is spending longer sitting in a driveway or a hallway waiting its turn. A five-man crew turns the same job into one clean pass.

Fewer hours in the day. Less time your things are exposed. Less wear on everybody. That’s the trade, and on a short move it’s usually the cheaper one

If you’d rather handle the driving yourself and just need the muscle and the technique, that’s what our labor to load and unload service is for. Plenty of short moves go that way.

The Five Mistakes We See on Short Moves

We’ve been called out to plenty of “we’ll just do it ourselves, it’s right there” moves usually partway through, usually on day three. Here’s what goes wrong, every time:

1. Nobody packs. When the new house is 200 feet away, people carry open drawers, loose lamps, and armloads of clothes on hangers across the yard. Then something gets dropped, rained on, or lost. Pack short moves like real moves that’s what our packing service is there for.

2. It turns into three weekends. “We’ve got all month, we’ll move a little at a time.” Now you’re living between two houses, paying two power bills, sleeping on a mattress on the floor, and you can’t find the coffee maker. One day with a crew beats a month of trips.

3. Somebody drags instead of lifts. Short distance, tired arms, and suddenly a loaded dresser is being pushed across hardwood. That’s how floors get gouged and furniture legs snap.

4. One heavy thing hurts somebody. It’s almost always the same list: the safe, the gun safe, the piano, the hot tub, the fridge, the treadmill. Those don’t get easier because the destination is close the weight is the weight. That’s our hard-to-move items work, and it’s the single most common reason people call us mid-move.

5. Appliances go over unprepared. Washers not drained, ice makers still hooked up, fridges laid on their side, TVs riding loose in a truck bed. Short trip, permanent damage.

What Does Change on a Short Move

We’ll be straight with you, because we’d rather you trust us than overpay us:

  • It costs less. Less drive time, no long-distance mileage, usually a single trip. A move down the street is one of the most affordable jobs we do.
  • It’s often a half-day. Most same-street and same-neighborhood moves in Enterprise wrap up in one shot with the right crew size.
  • You can be pickier about placement. No truck waiting on a clock across three counties means we can take an extra minute getting the sectional where you actually want it.
  • You can move in stages if you truly need to. Big furniture and appliances with us, the odds and ends on your own schedule.

What doesn’t change: wrapping, padding, floor protection, proper lifting, and insurance. We’re fully licensed and insured on a 300-foot move exactly like we are on a 300-mile one.

What Does Change on a Short Move

We do a lot of these, and they’re rarely random:

  • Military families near Fort Rucker shifting from one rental to another between assignments, or moving off post into town
  • Growing families buying a bigger house in the same neighborhood so the kids don’t change schools
  • Downsizing into something easier to keep up with, often on the same side of town
  • Renovations everything into storage or a garage, then back in when the floors are done
  • Moving in with family to help out with a parent or a grandparent

Enterprise families move within Enterprise more than most people would guess. Staying put is part of what makes this a good place to live — and we’re glad to be the crew that helps you do it.
